Some people got jobs as singers or musicians in eateries, but were paid little or forgot about wages and were even paid off with food.

The blues is a music genre that typically consists of 12 or so bars, divided into verses, with each verse containing the same chord progression. The tempo can vary but is typically fairly slow. Blues music is improvisational in nature. Just like jazz or rock, the basis of a song already exists, but the solo instruments take the parts between each other, presenting a dialog of sorts. Urban blues originated after the completion of the American Civil War in the 1870s. It was invented by African Americans who moved to cities. This genre remains at its peak of popularity in America so far. Musicians such as Joe Turner combined blues with rhythms to produce what is now known as rhythm and blues. It was originally a combination of jazz and gospel music, but its now a genre that is made up of soul, funk, and elements from other genres. Blues music is different than before because of the new tools. They start to use electric guitars, bass guitars, and microphones. These changes have led to the voice of a singer being amplified. Thanks to the revolution it caused, an ensemble of four performers were able to sound louder and more powerful than an 18-person band. One of the most famous rock blues players is Chuck Berry and another is BB King. They modernized the blues and added jazz rhythms, gradually taking it away from the original folk version. Blues rock was an English direction, according to some sources. Jimi Hendrix became its ancestor in the official version, according to other sources. This style was characterized by a very aggressive sound and an improvisational quality of music. For this reason, it is not as widely used today as it once was. Nevertheless, some performers who play this style can be seen still attempting in the business.

One of the hallmarks of the blues is improvisation. Using a “question – answer” structure, most are based in either minor pentatonic or natural major scales. The harmony of blues can be quite simple as it includes only three functions: tonic, subdominant and dominant – the first, fourth and fifth steps of the frets.

It might be hard to believe but black music started out as “white” music. In 1909 Hart Vand composed a song called Dallas Blues which became popular. Later on, two more compositions were published that had a similar style to the article previously mentioned. However, these were not blues music yet. A specific form of classical blues, with its defining features, came about in the 1920s. Previous compositions, based on unsuppressed self-expression, began to be called rural or archaic.

In the 1920s, America was gripped by the blues obsession. That’s why representatives of record companies traveled all over the country in search of both more obscure singers and more mainstream ones, proclaiming them “the personifications of blues” when they found them.

Mainstream style.
In this century, R&B (Rhythm and blues, R’n’B or RnB) is in its heyday. A dozen years ago, it was thought that R&B is a purely American product, no one but the Americans do not need. And in general, it was an imitation of real music.

But the persistence of the producers nevertheless gave its fruit – lately R&B has really become “the main genre of mass song”. This style turns out to be quite full-fledged and productive – at least because there are more and more colored guys and girls with real voices, talent and energy. But it does seem sometimes that the term R&B now refers to anything. How right is that?

Some conspiracy theorists see the rise of R&B as a result of a conspiracy of producers, record labels, globalists and who knows what else. The new fashion generates sincere enthusiasm of some and deaf irritation of others. It’s a style that’s irritatingly hyper-emotional, vocal, melodic and downright hedonistic.

Some educated people (and music journalists) are especially irritated by the word itself, a real three-letter swear word. R&B is rhythm and blues! Heck, we remember – it’s someone from the old rock ‘n’ rollers, almost Chuck Berry. And now some mulattoes in fur coats…

A total reassessment of values! What is the world coming to, – nervously asked normal people (and even music journalists). But no one – and music journalists even less so – has yet bothered to answer the question of where this lost link really is?

If you tell anyone today that great rock ‘n’ roll is just “simplified R&B,” they’ll get the wrong idea. Even though it’s essentially like that: the root is the same, the trunks are different.

Nowadays, the term “rock ‘n’ roll” refers to any driving guitar music. The same thing happened with rhythm and blues: the genre was so influential and widespread that almost all postwar popular music can be defined by this term. It has long evolved and in different decades looked different.

Rhythm and blues rose to unprecedented heights after… its own demise. And the case was this. A significant catalyst in the process of popularizing the genre was the Atlantic label. It was in its depths that rhythm and blues was finally formed as a style, and important names were forever engraved on the Atlantic’s tablets.

Among the heroes of the style are names that only a die-hard fan and collector knows today. But you can’t ignore musicians like Clyde McPhatter and Chuck Willis. The work of these artists approaches the importance of Ray Charles – they, too, did a lot of work on the soul-nive that had already become a classic by the beginning of the 70s.

Or, for example, Percy Sledge, the singer-songwriter of “When A Man Loves A Woman. In 1966 this song, known to us through the interpretation of Simon & Garfunkel or Michael Bolton, Sledge became the first song of the Southern soul that reached the first (!) place of the pop charts.

And it almost happened by accident. Sledge sang in The Esquires Combo, and began his solo career at the instigation of a local disc jockey named Quin Ivy. Quin Ivey didn’t just give advice for nothing – he dreamt of being a producer himself and was looking for a mentee as green as himself. He did manage to get Sledge to record a few songs.

Why is the “soul” style associated with the Motown label?
Soul and R&B didn’t just exist in the South, of course. For example, there was the still famous Chess label in Chicago. The legendary Curtis Mayfield (better known to us, again, through the vulgar mainstream version of the Rod Stewart-Jeff Beck tandem), the author of the stunningly moving and wise religious song “People Get Ready”, recorded there.

The new genre that was rapidly gaining crazy popularity began, oddly enough, with a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” by The Byrds.

It should be noted that at that time folk music was often referred to: for example, its influence is evident in the songs “Hide Your Love Away” and “I’m a Loser” by The Beatles. The genre’s recognizable features include clean vocals without the use of sound-altering effects and the legendary jangling electric guitar sound, which was first used in the music of The Searchers and in the recordings of The Beatles – particularly when George Harrison used the 12-string Rickenbacker guitar.

In America the genre was developed by Crosby, Nash & Young, Buffalo Springfield and Stills. In England, Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Steeleye Span, and Donovan. The symbiosis of ethnic, folk music and rock elements was also common in Europe and Scandinavia. It did not take root only in Saudi Arabia and Asian countries because of cultural and political circumstances.

Folk-rock set the tone for the further development of musical culture, giving impetus to the appearance of its many subgenres. Thus, two decades later, in the music scene bursts folk-punk.

Features of the style
Now the folk motifs sounded in punk rock as well – both in the music of apolitical bands and in the works of bands with a clearly expressed civil position. The style owes its appearance directly to the Irish band The Pogues. Although the band is considered to be Irish because it uses the Celtic motifs, it was founded in London.

In 1982, the band was assembled by vocalist-guitarist Shane McGowan, of course toothless and perpetually drunk, in selected clichés of punk culture. Shane himself assured everyone that he couldn’t remember being sober since he was fourteen.

The band, as is typical of punk ideology, actively manifested its political stance. Because of the influence of the authorities the guys had to change the music video for the song “A Pair of Brown Eyes” where they spat on the portrait of Margaret Thatcher.

Despite the general atmosphere of drunken revelry and debauchery, the band not only made friends with punk rock and folk music, but also took the new genre of folk-punk to unprecedented heights. Three albums reached the top 10 of the UK charts, the second position was taken by the single “Fairytale of New York”, and a number of compositions climbed to the top of the Irish charts.

The most successful representatives of this style in the UK are the band Chumbawamba, musicians Attila The Stockbroker and Billy Bragg.

The United States of America was not inferior – on their stage folk-punk was presented by the most commercially successful band Violent Femmes.

The team’s debut album contained ten songs written by the group’s founder Gordon Gano while still in high school. A miracle happened, and Violent Femmes ended up selling three million copies, becoming three times platinum and never making the Billboard charts.

Other bands such as The Dead Milkmen, Hüsker Dü, and Articles of Faith were also drawn to the folk sound. A little later the German band Across The Border brought a new sound to the genre.

By the beginning of the 90s, the folk-punk boom had passed and interest in it diminished. At the beginning of 90s the interest to folk-punk went down and it got less and less popular in its subgenres – Celtic-punk and jipsy-punk.

Celtic-punk
It’s not hard to guess that this time punk rock merged with Celtic folk motifs. The distinctive feature of musical bands of this style is the use of ethnic instruments along with the classic rock stuff. So in the Celtic punk you can hear the sounds of bagpipes, fiddle accordion, fiddle, whistle, banjo or mandolin.

Despite the fact that the lyrics are based on Irish and Scottish folklore, and their themes are most often the plight of peoples, republicanism, independence and life of these diasporas, politics do not dominate in the lyrics of this genre.

Dropkick Murphys.
A Boston Celtic band founded in 1996 by Mike McColgan, Ken Casey, and Rick Barton.

The band got its name from the former soccer player, soon to become a wrestler, John Murphy, nicknamed “Dropkick” (as wrestling calls a jump kick). Although the lineup has changed, one thing has remained unchanged – they all honor the cultural traditions of the Irish people and perform annually at the St. Patrick’s Day festival in Boston.
