When seemingly incompatible musical styles are combined, an amazing form of new music often emerges. Folk punk, the new musical genre born from merging punk’s aggressive energy with folk music, is a trailblazer in its own right due to the obstacles it dismantles and its unique musical viewpoint.

In this post, we aim to shed some light on Folk Punk by exploring its history, features, and some of the finest folk punk albums ever.

What Is Folk Punk?

Folk punk is the merging of traditional folk music and punk rock. Folk punk artists often use acoustic instruments but do it with the fierce enthusiasm associated with the hardcore punk style. The genre had a significant breakthrough in the 1980s and is still a significant component of the alternative and indie rock scenes today.

Anti-folk, Celtic punk, Gypsy punk, and cowpunk are all offshoots of the folk punk movement. Each of these genres has its own distinct personality, but they all have one trait: they merge the DIY punk mentality with the age-old folk music canon.

A Brief History of Folk Punk

Evolution of folk punk music

Folk punk music has an abrasive edge similar to punk rock, and it takes inspiration from the counterculture’s long tradition in folk music. The following are some important timelines in the history of folk punk:

Traditional Folk Influences

Folk rock pioneers such as Bob Dylan, Donovan, and Woody Guthrie inspired early folk punk bands by relying on traditional and folkloric musical traditions. Folk punk musicians used the rebellious spirit of folk music and reshaped it to their aims, establishing a new genre.

American Bands Transition From Rock and Country

Bands like the Meat Puppets and the Violent Femmes pioneered American folk music. These bands’ music included parts of punk rock and country folk. Violent Femmes’ pop-punk sentiments were conveyed via acoustic instruments. Both matured in the early 1980s, just as punk music left radio playlists.

The Rise of British Folk Punk

Many British bands were among the first to experiment with folk punk. The Pogues, a London-based band with Irish roots, were first among equals. Furthermore, Billy Bragg’s solo performance, in which he played an overdriven electric guitar like an acoustic dreadnought, significantly affected the folk-punk movement. This event did a lot for Bragg’s reputation as a professional performer. Oysterband, Levellers, the Men They Couldn’t Hang, and Citizen Fish were among the period’s notable British folk punk acts.

1990s Expansion

The folk punk genre grew in popularity throughout the 1990s. Several English and Celtic folk punk bands developed a more aggressive style resembling street punk and hardcore. This category includes bands such as the Dropkick Murphys, the Cockney Rejects, and Flogging Molly. With their banjo playing, Bad Livers established the country-punk genre. They blended the Meat Puppets’ approach with traditional bluegrass. The Moldy Peaches, a New York art-punk band, pioneered a style of punk music known as “anti-folk.” Gogol Bordello, a New York City band, helped pave the way for Gypsy punk. This style was created by combining Eastern European folk music with punk rock and ska.

Plan-It-X Records

Samantha Jane Dorsett established Plan-It-X Records in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1994. Ghost Mice, Against Me!, This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb, Japanther, Ramshackle Glory, and Defiance, Ohio; all recorded songs on the label. The folk punk scene felt most at home at Plan-It-X, which presented various performances.

Twenty-First-Century Folk Punk

Folk-punk has continued to receive a lot of love from fans of alternative rock and indie music. AJJ (formerly known as Andrew Jackson Jihad), Apes of the State, Crywank, Harley Poe, Rail Yard Ghosts, and Days N’ Daze are among the musicians who have achieved popular recognition.

Essential Features of Folk Punk Music

Folk punk music typically exhibits several core features, including the following:

  1. Traditional instruments. Electric guitars, electric basses, and a drum kit comprise the typical folk-punk band’s equipment. Traditional instruments that may be employed include the hurdy-gurdy, banjo, accordion, bagpipes, tin whistle, flute, violin, washboard, and hurdy-gurdy.
  2. Loud vocals. Like most punk music, folk punk has loud, angry lead vocals. Regarding intensity, leads like Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes, and Shane MacGowan of the Pogues are all within a few degrees of each other.
  3. Political themes. Many folk punk bands’ songs are overtly political. This political viewpoint includes anything from ecology to socialism to anarchism. The political themes in folk punk, also present in many punk songs, are often stated directly rather than indirectly.
  4. A mix of multiple folk traditions. The phrase “folk punk” refers to music inspired by various folk traditions, such as country-western from the United States, traditional Irish ballads, gypsy music from Romania, and folk music from New York coffeehouses. While some ensembles are only familiar with one style, others may draw from various folk traditions to create their distinct sound.

Iconic Folk Punk Albums

A few albums in the folk-punk subgenre have had a significant effect on future works. These albums, among others, have played an essential role in defining the genre’s distinct musical landscape. And they include the following:

Violent Femmes – “Violent Femmes”

Violent Femmes’ debut self-titled album is largely recognized as a seminal record for the aforementioned subgenre. Using the phrase “Violent Femmes” When it was released in 1983, the album’s raw intensity and angst-ridden song lyrics made it groundbreaking and left a lasting influence on listeners. It was a breakthrough point in the growth of punk rock because it combined the melodies of folk music with the combative attitude of punk rock.

Despite its unorthodox sound and subject matter, “Violent Femmes” was a financial success, introducing the band to the world and paving the path for subsequent bands of a similar calibre.

Against Me – “Against Me! Is Reinventing Axl Rose”

The album “Against Me! Is Reinventing Axl Rose” marked a watershed event in the folk-punk subgenre’s evolution. It exemplifies the band’s ability to create songs with broad appeal and enduring relevance by combining a raw, energetic sound with thought-provoking lyrics. This album highlights the band’s distinct style, which combines folk and punk elements to produce an unusual yet instantly recognizable sound. The uncommon combination of musical styles enhances the record’s depth and complexity, distinguishing it from other albums in the folk-punk genre.

Flogging Molly – “Swagger”

Flogging Molly’s 2011 album “Swagger” is an important addition to the subgenre. The band produced a unique and catchy sound by blending parts of traditional Irish music with punk rock. As a consequence, the record received widespread praise. The lyrical themes of “Swagger,” which often centre on personal experiences of pain and triumph over it, exemplify the rebellious spirit that pervades folk punk. Flogging Molly’s “Swagger” incorporates elements from many different musical genres, demonstrating the band’s artistic diversity and originality.

Dropkick Murphys – “Going Out in Style”

The Dropkick Murphys‘ “Going Out in Style” CD highlights their distinct sound. The CD, released in 2011, achieves a wonderful mix between unbridled excitement and superb musicianship. The band has carved out a space for themselves in the folk-punk subgenre as a result of their particular combination of punk rock and traditional Celtic music.

Because of the album’s narrative-driven lyrics and high-energy instrumentals, this album is a good example of Dropkick Murphys’ ability to make music that is intriguing and deeply moving.

Frank Turner – “England Keep My Bones”

Frank Turner’s 2011 CD “England Keep My Bones” is a gripping combination of folk and punk with a complex tapestry of songs highlighted by Turner’s expressive voice and lyrical narrative. This CD is a fun mash-up of folk and punk. In this investigation of English identity, history, and environment, Turner deftly combines his personal experiences with bigger social topics. “England Keep My Bones” is a tribute to Turner’s brilliance as a composer, showcasing his ability to write deeply personal and widely meaningful music.

Conclusion

Folk punk has a bright future in the long run. The positive indicators for the end of this subgenre include its thriving fan base, ongoing creativity, and close-knit sense of community. More experimental sounds, subjects, and cutting-edge production methods might be added to the genre’s rich fabric.

Though its future is difficult to predict, one thing is sure: folk punk will continue to defy expectations, challenge conventional knowledge, and give audiences something different from what they would otherwise hear. Folk punk is a cultural phenomenon, a social network, a way of life, and a musical genre. Folk punk is a musical subgenre that emphasises individuality and self-expression.

Folk Punk stands out among the rich collection of music genres. Folk punk is breathed to life when the rawness of punk rock marries folk music’s authenticity. The outstanding union has led to a genre that offers an eargasmic experience and mirrors the landscape it emerges from.

The article explores Folk Punk’s history and defining traits while exploring the juicy offer of 60 free spins with no deposit required. Let’s delve into the harmonious blend of folk punk and casino entertainment.

A Glimpse at Folk Punk Origin and Influence

The history of folk punk can be traced back to the 1980s; it was the by-product of punk rock’s DIY (do-it-yourself) ethos. Punk rock started a few years earlier, around the 1970s. Folk punk drew its inspiration from folk music’s emphasis on storytelling and the raw ethos of punk music.

Folk punk started as a punk counterculture movement. The punk rock era began in the 1970s, and the genre was associated with raw energy, frank social commentary, and DIY ethos. This epoch of rebellion led to experimentation with artists trying to clamp the acoustic scape of folk with punk’s provocative lyrics, and a new genre was born.

The pioneers of this fascinating genre of music are Billy Braggs and Violent Femmes. They kicked off the play of folk punk as an intricate music genre. The 1980s welcomed a refining and a little touch to the new genre. More instruments took to the stage, and people started seeing how music can serve as a means to be heard and also enjoyed.

From Underdogs to Mainstream: Evolutions of Folk Punk

The journey of folk punk is a testament to a dynamic evolution. The music genre started as an underdog, almost unknown to many, and became mainstream. Musicians often had to self-release their works, book music shows, and engage fans directly. This burgeoning stage for the genre allowed them to create a unique identity.

Music With a Message

At its core, folk punk is non-conforming. The music genre refuses to bend to conventions and embodies the do-it-yourself ethos that breeds self-expression. Their lyrics aren’t just strings of words fiddled to rhyme. But their lyrics are saddled with a message, often on societal and political matters.

The genre serves as a medium to voice out discontent and concerns. Since the lyrics of folk punk are anchored to the vital message, it enables listeners to relate to and reflect on the world’s complex issues. Hence, their song lyrics resonate! There is a certain emotional requirement for songs crafted in the folk punk genre.

DIY Ethos

One of folk punk’s profound traits is to embrace imperfections. The DIY ethos, which sits comfy as a significant part of the punk culture, is also a defining trait of folk punk. Musicians often jump on raw and unpolished production rather than conform to the slick pose of mainstream genres.

Since opting for a raw and unpolished production is intentional, it adds a bit of authenticity. It demonstrates that folk punk prioritizes a clear message to pristine production. However, this rawness doesn’t equate to awful-sounding. Folk punks adorn various instruments and often introduce unconventional instruments to make incredible sounds!

Hip-hop is a cultural and creative revolution that has permeated every aspect of society, from music to politics. Hip-hop music is an important part of the culture.

One of the defining features of hip-hop is a catchy rhyming voice track over a driving, pulsating rhythm. Hip-hop music developed in the 1970s due to cross-cultural interaction between young people of African descent, Latino descent, and Caribbean descent in New York City. Mixing, rhyming, beatboxing, and graffiti are the main foundations of hip-hop as a cultural movement.

Growth And Impact

A plethora of offshoots of hip-hop has emerged since the genre’s origin, such as trap, grime, crunk, gangster rap, rap metal, chillhop, bounce, Latin hip-hop, mumble rap, and conscious hip-hop. Hip-hop artists and groups that have made significant contributions to the genre include Eazy-E, Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube, Nas, Jay-Z, Lil’ Kim, Dr. Dre, Nicki Minaj, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, and Outkast, among many others.

Hip-hop was unstoppable from its early days in the 1970s to its eventual dominance in the United States. New school hip hop emerged in the early 1980s; this trend stressed the use of drum machines, a minimalist aesthetic, radio songs, and social and political criticism. These musicians abandoned the raucous rhyming and funk-inspired sounds of “old-school hip-hop.”

Hip-hop’s heyday was in the ’80s and ’90s when several artists achieved widespread popularity and introduced significant new elements with each album they released. Tupac Shakur, Nas, Public Enemy, Snoop Dogg, The Notorious B.I.G., Dr. Dre, Boogie Down Productions, A Tribe Called Quest, and Big Daddy Kane are just a few of the major musicians who contributed to the movement. Gangsta rap, a type of rap popularized by performers like Schoolly D, Ice-T, and N.W.A., also gained popularity during this time.

By the late ’90s, hip hop had become a national phenomenon, spawning stars like Lil Wayne, Timbaland, Jay-Z, Puff Daddy, Nelly, Ja Rule, Eminem, Dmx, and 50 Cent. Naughty by Nature won the first-ever Grammy for Best Rap Album, which was added to the awards show that year.

Heavy metal, punk, jazz, alternative rock, and electronic were all styles that many musicians in the 2000s drew inspiration from. Outkast, Kid Cudi, Kanye West, MF Doom, Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz, Juicy J, The Roots, Mos Def, Drake, Aesop Rock, Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, and Gnarls Barkley were all either established names or on the rise at this time.

With the advent of online music distribution and streaming services around the turn of the century and into the present day, there has been a plethora of new musical acts, compilation albums, and innovative practices. Cardi B, Future, Lizzo, Travis Scott, SZA, Megan Thee Stallion, 21 Savage, and Lil Uzi Vert are all examples of successful newer artists.

Legends

Hip-hop has evolved and grown throughout the years, but there are still pioneers that paved the way for subsequent musicians.

Dr. Dre: Dr. Dre, once of the rap group N.W.A., went on to have enormous success as a solo artist and producer, cementing his place as a seminal figure in the rise of West Coast hip-hop.

Jay-Z: Since 1996, Jay-Z has been a prolific musician and is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in contemporary rap and hip-hop. At 23, he is the rapper with the most Grammys ever.

Kanye West: From experimental music to gospel, from heavy sampling to synth, Kanye West’s career covers a wide range of musical styles and sounds. He is widely regarded as a driving force behind hip-ongoing hop’s evolution by bringing fresh ideas and sounds to the scene.

Lil’ Kim: Rapper and style icon Lil’ Kim has had many number-one singles, such as “No Time,” “Not Tonight,” and “Big Momma Thang.” Her albums have been certified platinum three times.

Public Enemy: New York hip-hop duo Chuck D and Flavor Flav’s Public Enemy have been making waves since 1985 with their politically charged lyrics and infamous member monikers.

Run-DMC: The first hip-hop group to appear on MTV and now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Run-DMC helped pave the way for the genre in the 1980s.

The Wu-Tang Clan: The Wu-Tang Clan is a rap group from Staten Island featuring such legends of the hip-hop scene as Ol’ Dirty Bastard, RZA, and Method Man. You’ll often find their first album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), on lists of the greatest rap albums of all time.

Nicki Minaj: Nicki Minaj has been certified platinum for all four of her studio albums, making her one of the highest-selling female hip-hop artists.

The general stereotype about gambling being a vice has led many to believe that only people with an addiction can be found in a casino. However, people with that school of thought have been proven wrong continually.

The casino has always been a place punters visit for entertainment, as many casinos around the world offer exactly that with great music, food, and scenery. Amongst these great musicians, who many punters would love to watch their performances at the casinos, are also punters who enjoy playing a casino classic or another during their leisure time.

Some of these entertainers who are well-established in their career paths have also hit jackpots while having fun at casinos, proving that time spent at a casino does not have to be worthless. In this article, Gambling-code experts named some of these well-known musicians who have won big in casinos.

1.  P. Diddy

P. Diddy is a legend in the rap scene, a name anyone who listens to music must have heard of. Through his rapping career, Diddy has made millions of dollars and will continue to make good money even if he decides to retire today. In addition to being a well-established rapper, he is also a producer for big names in the industry, like Usher.

Despite all the achievement, this legend is also a regular punter at casinos who enjoys gambling and casino gameplay and is quite good at it, as he has gotten his fair share of wins while betting at casino tables. Due to his popularity in the entertainment industry and the casino scene, he was once honored by an Atlantic City casino called Harrah’s Casino as he was invited to inaugurate new blackjack tables.

2.  50 Cent

Popularly known as 50 Cent, Curtis James Jackson is another popular entertainer who also fancies times at the casino as at a link. As he used to be friends with Floyd Mayweather, a well-known high-stakes sports bettor, it is no surprise that 50 Cent developed an interest in sports betting. Just like Floyd, who is never hesitant to place bets in six to seven figures, 50 Cent has also made some insane bets that were great for him. Many other punters use popular gambling sources like https://gambling-code.cz/casino/kajot when indulging in online betting activities.

In the NFC Championship in 2011, 50 staked a whopping sum of half a million dollars on New York Giants against the San Fransisco’s 49ers, placing hope and money on his hometown’s team. Luckily, the Giants made him proud to have grown up in New York as they beat the 49ers 20-17.

By staking on this team once again, 50 was able to win a million dollars through a Super Bowl bet as the Giants defeated the New England Patriots by a score of 21-17.

3.  Gladys Knight

Gladys Knight is a veteran in the music industry and has done well for herself. In her career, Gladys has been nominated for the Grammy Awards over 20 times and has gone home with a total of 7 wins from these nominations.

Las Vegas is the home of casinos and indulgence, and it got to Gladys as she indulged in new hobbies that were quite pleasurable. When she moved to Vegas in the 80s, she started to enjoy playing casino games, including classics like poker and blackjack. As a newbie in the casino scene, Gladys smartly started by only placing small stakes till she got the hang of the rules. Soon after, Gladys was confident enough to stake higher. From her stakes and time spent at casinos, Gladys has had big wins, taking home over $60,000 once.

4.  Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra is also one entertainer who has performed exploits in the music industry. Selling one record is a challenging feat, but Frank has been able to sell over 150 million of them. Being a very famous musician, he has also appeared in over 50 movies.

This man has not only been successful in his chosen career path, but he has also had a very successful casino experience. In his days in the casinos, Frank has recorded more wins than losses. He is a casino all-rounder, as he can play various gambling games, including poker, roulette, and even bingo.

Frank was so skilled in the casino scene that he established his own gambling company, Cal Neva Lodge & Casino.

Conclusion

You never know who you might find at a casino. All sorts of people, regardless of background, career, or financial status, can indulge in gambling for numerous reasons. A casino is a place with limitless possibilities, and even some of your favorite celebrities are interested in the possibilities that can be gotten in a casino.

The modern musical world is not just limited to the compositions of the classical music tradition. We also have rock, jazz, and hip-hop. Almost anybody has a huge place in their life where mass genres of music, such as pop, occupy a place. These genres have origins in both classical and folk music. This is why all professional musicians need a broad understanding of style, history and technique to be able to work with any genre on their instruments.

Blues is a genre of music that originated in the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became very popular and is still being loved by listeners. Blues is a mixed African American style, combining such styles as work song, spirituals with folk music from Western Europe like waltz.

In order to have a complete understanding of what the blues is, you need to work out where it comes from. It originated a long time ago when many African slaves worked on plantations and did some of the dirtiest work. There’s been a lot of things that have influenced blues music, one of them being slavery. Slaves used it to sing during their long hours of work as well as in their free time. Eventually, African music became lighter and more thoughtful and the blues style was born from it. There is no way to tell exactly when this occurred. The Mississippi Delta was a center for the development of the blues. Slaves were often condemned to never-ending hard labour, which also included the dirtiest jobs. That’s why they don’t always have high-quality work to offer. They may also become vagabonds or stop performing entirely. Some people got jobs as singers or musicians in eateries, but were paid little or forgot about wages and were even paid off with food.

The blues is a music genre that typically consists of 12 or so bars, divided into verses, with each verse containing the same chord progression. The tempo can vary but is typically fairly slow. Blues music is improvisational in nature. Just like jazz or rock, the basis of a song already exists, but the solo instruments take the parts between each other, presenting a dialog of sorts. Classical forms of compositions are usually 12 or 16 bars. The characteristic features of this genre are – the use of lower steps – 3, 5 and 7 in natural major. This is the blues scale..The stories are different, but the theme of unrequited love, hard work, and slavery is prominent in each.

There are more than 10 kinds of blues music, the brightest of which are urban and rhythm and blues.

Urban blues originated after the completion of the American Civil War in the 1870s. It was invented by African Americans who moved to cities. This genre remains at its peak of popularity in America so far. Musicians such as Joe Turner combined blues with rhythms to produce what is now known as rhythm and blues. It was originally a combination of jazz and gospel music, but its now a genre that is made up of soul, funk, and elements from other genres. Blues music is different than before because of the new tools. They start to use electric guitars, bass guitars, and microphones. These changes have led to the voice of a singer being amplified. Thanks to the revolution it caused, an ensemble of four performers were able to sound louder and more powerful than an 18-person band. One of the most famous rock blues players is Chuck Berry and another is BB King. They modernized the blues and added jazz rhythms, gradually taking it away from the original folk version. Blues rock was an English direction, according to some sources. Jimi Hendrix became its ancestor in the official version, according to other sources. This style was characterized by a very aggressive sound and an improvisational quality of music. For this reason, it is not as widely used today as it once was. Nevertheless, some performers who play this style can be seen still attempting in the business.

One of the hallmarks of the blues is improvisation. Using a “question – answer” structure, most are based in either minor pentatonic or natural major scales. The harmony of blues can be quite simple as it includes only three functions: tonic, subdominant and dominant – the first, fourth and fifth steps of the frets.

It might be hard to believe but black music started out as “white” music. In 1909 Hart Vand composed a song called Dallas Blues which became popular. Later on, two more compositions were published that had a similar style to the article previously mentioned. However, these were not blues music yet. A specific form of classical blues, with its defining features, came about in the 1920s. Previous compositions, based on unsuppressed self-expression, began to be called rural or archaic.

In the 1920s, America was gripped by the blues obsession. That’s why representatives of record companies traveled all over the country in search of both more obscure singers and more mainstream ones, proclaiming them “the personifications of blues” when they found them.

The concept of discomfort is obvious in music. This can be found in the form, melody, rhythm, harmony and sound character. These are all called aspects of music. La musique donne une livree aux debates de deux mondes, ceux du passe et du present.

To master the musical language of blues, a musician needs to know the features of means of expressions used in it.

It’s impossible to talk about the musical side of the blues without discussing its poetry. In a sense, these two go hand-in-hand – one cannot exist without the other because of how they contrast with each other. It’s all about contradictions – both in form and content.

This is one of the most popular genres in music today. Many listeners are drawn to it and adore its sound. Musicians find themselves spellbound by its melodies that can evoke strong emotions too. The raw, guttural sound of the blues is something that resonates deep down in your soul. Truly appreciators of the genre believe you need to listen to it in one breath and with all your heart.

When talking about classical music, keep in mind that this definition can be used in different contexts.

What is classical music?
In most cases, when we use the definition “classical”, we mean music that has stood the test of time and which even in modern society has its own audience. We refer to classical music not only as masterpieces of musical art, but also as entertainment genres of the past, such as waltzes and operettas. A narrower understanding of classical music, which is perceived in academic circles of musicians, music historians, and art historians, states that classical music is academic music, which has a continuity of generations and a unity of genre diversity, covering the late 17th century and early 19th century.

In terms of history, classical music is defined as music from the second half of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. It is this period is traditionally correlated with classicism. Since the concept of classicism in the fine arts and literature is to follow the ancient tradition, it is not too broadly applicable to music in this context, as the musical culture of ancient Rome and ancient Greece has not practically reached us.

What is classical music?
In colloquial speech and journalism, the concept of classical music refers to the so-called academic music, the successor of the musical genre formed in Europe in the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. It can be said that the modern composers-academists of the twentieth century, belonging to the avant-garde trends, are in conflict with the musical tradition of the past. Also throughout the 20th century there were repeated attempts to cross academic music with various other traditions, such as symphojazz, a kind of hybrid of classical and jazz performed by a symphony orchestra.

There is a right to life definition of the term “classical music,” according to which such may be considered those works that, after a certain period of time have not been lost in the annals of history and the shelves of art, and remained the heritage of mankind. Thus, music that has survived at least one generation can be called classical, as a model of skillful creation of quality music for all time.

The word “classical” comes from the Latin classicus, which means exemplary. The Encyclopedia of Music provides definitions of the term “classical music” as follows:

The exemplary musical works of prominent composers of the past that have stood the test of time;
Musical works written at a specific historical period in art (from Baroque to Modernism);
Musical works written according to certain rules and canons with the necessary proportions and intended to be performed by a symphony orchestra, ensemble or soloists.

Classical music varies in genre: symphonies, suites, sonatas, etudes, nocturnes, fantasies, fugues, operas, ballets, and sacred music. The main instruments for classical music are strings, keyboards, wind and percussion instruments: violin, cello, piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, timpani, cymbals, drum and, of course, the organ.

Organ
This instrument can be considered the ancestor of classical music, because it dates back to the Renaissance period, i.e. the 16th century! And its golden age is the 17th century, the era of the Baroque. It was then that such musical genres as the sonata and opera emerged, which are still relevant today.

Johann Sebastian Bach
The greatest genius in music history, Johann Sebastian Bach, created during the Baroque period, and it was he who opened up new and limitless possibilities for the creation of musical works. The music of that era was characterized by ornate forms, complexity, opulence and emotional intensity. Bach’s fugues, Handel’s oratorios and Vivaldi’s violin concertos The Seasons were born.

Ludwig van Beethoven
At the end of the 18th century another star of classical music rose in the musical firmament – Ludwig van Beethoven. He began to write music in the classical style inherited from Mozart. But real talent always brings something new with it, so it is said that Beethoven literally “split” the classical style with his music, becoming the founder of a new era – the era of Romanticism. Classical music of this era is more ardent, deep, emotionally expressive and individual. It is directed deep into the human soul, showing the depth and richness of the inner world. Such outstanding composers as Chopin, Strauss, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, and many others created during this period.

But at all times, in spite of the differences in styles and genres, classical music has been harmonious and highly spiritual. It was born in the soul of genius. With their works, artists wanted to reach into our hearts, to share their feelings and experiences with us, to show the subtlest shades and tones of human feelings and relationships.

Rock ‘n’ roll literally stirred up the youth of America in the mid-1950s. And then the whole world. And while young boys and girls were singing along to popular singers and rocking on the dancefloors, their parents were against the “innovations” in the music world. Why this style has become very popular and why it became an apple of discord between generations?

We owe the term “rock ‘n’ roll” to Alan Freed, an American DJ. He worked for a Cleveland radio station and very often played black music, because he noticed how white youth gravitated toward it. The name rock ‘n’ roll itself came from the then popular song “We’ll rock, we’ll roll.” It happened in 1952.

Giving the name to the new genre, Alan began to actively promote it. Radio airtime did not seem enough, so he began to arrange rock balls. Black and white people gathered at them – the American public was outraged! But why? U.S. history provides the answer.

Racial animosity in America escalated after World War II. Black people were not allowed to sit on the bus if a white American was standing. In the southern states, boys and girls of different skin colors even danced on different floors. The same hostile attitude developed toward Negro music. Gospel and rhythm and blues had no place on the radio. But only the older generation, who gravitated toward country and orchestral music, devoid of improvisation and vivid emotion, thought so.

The post-war youth demanded new idols, new music, free and incendiary. The young people of that time did not share racial prejudices, so without a shadow of a doubt they wandered into black radio stations in search of rhythmic sounds. That’s what Alan Freed took advantage of.

Conservative parents did not share their children’s interests. As a result, rock and roll was declared war. Famous people called rock’n’roll a “black plague” capable of destroying America. Jeans were banned in schools, parents scolded children for their tastes, in an effort to diminish the influence of black culture. But for young Americans who were tired of living in a world of delusion, the skin color of their favorite performers didn’t matter.

The song “Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Hale, a white American, changed everything. The public heard it for the first time in April 1954, but met it without much enthusiasm. But it was enough to make the composition the soundtrack to the youth film The Slate Board Jungle for the rock ‘n’ roll age to begin. Few people know about that movie now, but “Rock Around the Clock” is identifiable from the first chords.

By the time Bill Hale recorded the song, he was 30 years old. Age wasn’t the only thing he repelled young people with. He didn’t have the black performer energy that young people craved. They were waiting for a new idol that met their needs. Elvis Presley became that idol. With his arrival came the heyday of rock ‘n’ roll, which peaked in 1957.

The early rock and roll artists also included Little Richard and Fats Domino, who played boogie-woogie on his favorite piano. Each of the musicians brought something different to the music. Chuck Berry stood out with spectacular moves that are still used at rock concerts today. Little Richard is remembered for his frantic rhythm and loud shrieks.

The more popular the new music became, the louder the opponents were outraged. Elvis’ behavior combined with his bold image only fueled the fire. Throwing off his clothes during the concert was outrageous, according to conservative Americans. In spite of this, young people continued to dance to rousing rhythms.

The second wave of rock ‘n’ roll performers included such names as Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Buddy Holly, who despite his classic suit and glasses won over black audiences. Equally famous among fans of the genre is Lin Ray. Thanks to this American, we know guitar music for what it is.

In the late ’50s, headlines began to appear in newspapers: “Rock and roll is dead”. Fans had a lot to think about. After all, Elvis was drafted into the army, Chuck Berry got a prison sentence, Jerry Lee Lewis lost the respect of his fans because he married an underage girl, and Buddy Holly and Richie Valens tragically died in a plane crash. Who would be able to continue the hit lineup and rekindle the hearts of young people? The Liverpool Four. The Beatles managed to give rock ‘n’ roll a different sound and make the whole world go crazy over their songs. But this is a new turn in the development of music.

But still: is rock ‘n’ roll dead or alive? As long as there are bands that perform the genre. As long as there are covers of popular American songs from the middle of the last century. As long as the memory of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and other founding fathers is still alive, we can’t say rock ‘n’ roll is dead. After all, their work is still popular. The hits of half a century ago are used as musical accompaniment for movies and commercials.

The musical style is a capacious and multifaceted concept. It can be defined as a figurative unity, the totality of means of expression of artistic and ideological content through the language of music. The concept of style of music is so broad that the most begs for its specification: the term refers to different eras, genres, styles and schools, as well as to individual composers and even performers. Let’s try to understand what styles of music.

STYLE OF AN EPOCH
The concept of the style of the era focuses on the historical aspect. There are many classifications, some of which identify the largest historical eras in the development of music (Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, modernity, etc.), while others, on the contrary, split the history of music into relatively small periods, identified earlier by other art disciplines (Romanticism, Impressionism, Modernism, etc.). A classic example of the style of the era is Baroque music, the characteristic features of which are interest in the inner world of the individual, drama, contrasting portrayal of the forces of nature, the development of opera and instrumental music (C. Monteverdi, A. Vivaldi, G.F. Handel).

GENRE STYLE
Genre style reflects the specific content, musical techniques and features of certain musical genres, which, in turn, can be classified on various grounds. Therefore, the concept of style is most appropriate for those genres, which clearly expressed the most common features. This may include genres based on folk music (various ritual songs, folk dances), church chants, and romances. If we take works of major forms (opera, oratorio, symphony, etc.), then even here the style of the genre is always clearly discernible, despite the fact that it is superimposed on the styles of the era, direction and the author’s style. But if, on the other hand, a composer invents a new genre, then it is difficult to establish the features of the genre’s style straight away – it takes time, during which other works in the same genre will emerge. This was the case, for example, with Mendelssohn’s “Songs without Words. Agree, a strange song without words, but after his 48 samples of pieces in this genre, other composers began to boldly call their pieces by the same name.

STYLE OF MUSICAL DIRECTION
The style of a musical movement echoes the style of an era in many ways: after all, some movements are regarded by musicologists as entire eras in music. But there are such areas, for which you can distinguish their peculiar only stylistic nuances. This includes the Viennese classical school (L. van Beethoven, J. Haydn, Mozart). The classical school is characterized by simplicity, expressiveness, rich harmonic language, detailed development of the theme. Speaking of what styles of music can be, it is impossible to pass by national characteristics.

NATIONAL STYLE
The basis of the national musical style is the folklore beginning. Many great composers have been inspired by folk tunes, weaving them into their creations.

COMPOSER ASSOCIATION STYLE
If the school of composers is characterized by a high degree of commonality of artistic methods, then it is logical to identify and style inherent in this school. We can talk about the styles of polyphonic schools of the Renaissance, the styles of various Italian opera schools of the XVII century or the styles of instrumental schools of the XVII-XVIII centuries.

STYLE OF AN INDIVIDUAL COMPOSER
Composer’s style is a concept that is much easier to specify, because the work of any composer is limited to a relatively small time period and certain trends of the musical era. Thus, one can recognize the music of Mozart or Rossini, for example, literally by the first bars. Naturally, a composer, like any other person, changes over the course of his life, and this affects the style of his work. But certain stylistic features remain unchanged all the same, inherent only in him, are a kind of “business card” of the author.

PERFORMING STYLE
Performing art is based on the individual manner of performance of the musician, who interprets the composer’s intention in his own way. Performing style manifests itself in the emotional coloring of the performance of the works of a particular author. Bright examples here are those composers who were also virtuoso musicians. Niccolo Paganini, who stunned listeners with his impeccable technique and unusual methods of playing the violin, and the brilliant pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff, a true knight of music, who subordinated the melodic canvas to a strict rhythmic pattern. This is what styles of music can be. This list, of course, can be supplemented by classification and on other grounds, as the world’s musical heritage is large and varied.

Different people have different views on such a concept as folk music. Sometimes people feel quite strongly about the definition of folk music. Still, part of the essence of folk music is that it belongs to the people. The first national music-education portal, Dalatunes, presents users with music from all times, beginning in the eighth century. In addition, this portal gives Kazakh music lovers an opportunity not only to easily find and listen to their favorite track, but also to try their hand at karaoke.

There are two different meanings for the term “folk music”. The first meaning refers to traditional music. Folk music is music performed by people, not music recorded in a studio or performed on stage. Songs are passed down from generation to generation and often change as they are passed down (this change is called the “folk process”). People don’t sing these days the way they did in the past, but still. Examples of folk songs today include “Happy Birthday,” camp songs, and children’s songs.

The second meaning of “folk music” is a distinct genre. The roots of this genre are in traditional music. This genre is also referred to as “acoustic music” because acoustic instruments are usually used. This genre has its own fans, radio programs, organizations, and publications. Listening to music from any of these sources suggests that the music is part of folk music, even if it does not meet the strict definition of folk music.

There are many different kinds of music that can be considered part of folk music. In addition to a shared interest in the same type of music, many in society have similar values. Folk music is the music of the people. I wish anyone could play and sing, not just professional musicians. For many in the folk community, an interest in folk music is just one part of the interest in mass participation. Many people in the folk community prefer local, independent businesses over large corporations. Many in the folk community are politically liberal, advocating ideas such as the environment, peace, labor unions, racial equality, etc.

Traditional music has been the basis for the development of much other music, changing according to tradition and quality. Much of the change has occurred in the last two or three decades as a result of the interaction of new media and continuing tradition. As a student, collector, listener, performer, and composer of music related to tradition, one cannot help but be fascinated by the diversity of such music, and the ways it has evolved, persisted, and changed in response to the diversity of our worlds.
